Beethoven had nothing against composing music for money, which he practiced with interesting results. Commissioned by the Scottish folk-song collector George Thompson, he wrote no less than sixteen sets of piano variations on traditional European folk tunes. Often the publisher sent Beethoven back his arrangements because he considered them too difficult to perform. Amazingly, Beethoven rewrote these arrangements to make them simpler and more enjoyable. In this sense the flute or violin part ad libitum serves this purpose.
