Haydn in 1780 published a cycle of six sonatas for the piano (Hob. XVI:35–39 and 20) dedicated to the sisters Caterina and Marianna Auenbrugger, daughters of the austrian doctor Joseph Leopold Auenbrugger (considered the father of the percussive semiotics of chest diseases) and talented performers. Writing to his wife from Vienna in August 1773, Leopold Mozart had remarked on the ability of the two girls, who both played very well and were well trained.
