Schumann began work on the Toccata op. 7 when he was only 20 years old. The first manuscript of this Toccata was simply titled "Exercise"; it was only a few years later that he resumed his work and gave it its definitive form. The printed version of this “Toccata” differs considerably from the first ideas for the “Exercise”. The autograph of the final version has been lost, while the "Exercise" has survived in autograph manuscript form. In this edition the "Exercise" is reproduced in the appendix.
