According to Dvorák, "good music must also sound good on the piano." That is why, at the request of his publisher, after writing the original version of his Dumky-Trio (1891), in 1893 he wrote a version for piano four-hands. The piano version of the original trio became a work in its own and takes into account the specific nature of the piano sound through its accompanying figures, dynamics and articulation.

The Ukrainian word dúmky, plural of dúmka, from the verb dumati, is found in all Slavic languages and means to meditate, think, reflect. Dumky is the diminutive of the Ukrainian term duma (plural dumy) and is an elegiac ballad of Ukrainian origin celebrating great heroes, a sort of epic song that recalled the deeds of the Cossacks in the conquest of peace and freedom. Dvorak wrote some pieces entitled dumka (such as Dumka op. 35 for piano) intending for them a basic melancholic musical form, but interspersed with serene, pleasant, lighter sections. The Trio op. 90 in E minor "Dumky" takes its name from this poetic intention.
